Best Time to Visit Cairns: Wet Season vs Dry Season
Cairns is a year-round destination — but not all months are equal. The tropical climate splits into two distinct seasons, and knowing the difference will help you plan the best possible trip. Here's what 44 years of operating day tours from Cairns has taught us about when to go.
Dry Season: May to October — Peak Conditions
The dry season is the classic time to visit Cairns. From May through October, the weather is consistently warm, sunny, and low-humidity. Daytime temperatures sit between 23–28°C. Rain is rare. The Coral Sea is calm. Reef visibility is at its peak — often 15–25 metres on the outer reef. Every tour runs without weather-related disruption.
July is the single best month: the coolest, clearest conditions of the year, and you'll find the region full of other travellers from southern Australia and overseas who have timed their trips to perfection. Accommodation books out quickly in July — plan ahead.
June and August are almost as good, and slightly less crowded. September and October bring a hint of the approaching wet season — temperatures start climbing and humidity returns — but both remain excellent months for all tours.
- Low humidity, almost no rain
- 25–28°C days
- Peak reef visibility
- Best for all day tours
Wet Season: November to April — Lush but Hot
The wet season brings Cairns alive in a different way. The rainforest is at its most extraordinary: impossibly green, full of sound, thick with life. Waterfalls thunder across the Atherton Tablelands. The rivers run high. Humidity is intense — some days feel like a steam room — but the warmth and lushness have a tropical drama that dry-season visitors never see.
January to March is the peak of the wet season — Cairns receives the bulk of its 2,000mm annual rainfall in these months, usually as heavy afternoon thunderstorms rather than all-day drizzle. Mornings are typically clear. Tours operate and guides work around the weather, but expect some disruption on heavy rain days.
For the Daintree specifically, the wet season is spectacular. Waterfalls that are dry trickles in July become roaring cascades. The forest floor fills with ferns and orchids. If you can handle the heat and humidity, the wet season Daintree is unforgettable.
- 30–33°C, high humidity
- Heavy afternoon rain, Jan–Mar
- Most spectacular waterfall season
- Lush, green rainforest
Shoulder Seasons: April–May and October–November
The transition months either side of the seasons offer a middle path: fewer crowds than peak July, better prices, and conditions that are generally still very good for touring. April is a particularly appealing option — the wet season is winding down, the waterfalls are still running, and temperatures are starting to drop from the extreme wet-season heat.
October marks the start of the build-up: humidity rises, temperatures climb, and the first storms of the wet season begin to appear. Reef conditions are still good. Tours operate normally. It's a slightly edgy time — experienced travellers who know Cairns well often consider it the best value month of the year.
May is simply excellent — the wet season is behind you, the dry is established, and prices haven't yet jumped to peak-July levels. An underrated time to visit.
- April–May: best shoulder value
- Less crowded than July
- Good conditions for all tours
- Waterfalls still running in April
Month-by-Month Snapshot
January–February: Peak wet season. Hot (32°C+), humid, afternoon storms. Rainforest lush and dramatic. Some road closures possible. Tours run, expect flexibility.
March: Wet season easing. Still warm and humid. Waterfalls peaking. Good for Daintree. Not recommended for reef (visibility reduced, some sea swell).
April: Transition month. Humidity dropping, temperatures falling. Excellent for Daintree and Kuranda. Reef improving. Good value.
May: Dry season begins. Ideal. Comfortable temperatures, low humidity, good reef visibility. Quieter than later dry season months.
June–August: Peak dry season. The best Cairns conditions of the year. Book ahead — July fills quickly. All tours run at their best.
September–October: Late dry season. Still excellent but humidity beginning to return. Good value. Reef visibility excellent.
November–December: Build-up begins. Hot, increasingly humid. First wet season storms arrive in November. Reef conditions can deteriorate. Wet season character begins.
- Best overall: June–August
- Best value: April–May
- Best waterfalls: Jan–April
- Avoid: Jan–Feb (weather unpredictable)
Which Tours Work in Each Season
Reef tours: Best in the dry season (May–October). Calm seas, excellent visibility. Wet season can bring reduced visibility and occasional rough weather — check conditions with your operator before booking.
Kuranda tours: Year-round. The rainforest is spectacular in both seasons. In the wet, morning mist hangs in the canopy and every leaf glistens. The Scenic Railway and Skyrail operate year-round.
Daintree & Cape Tribulation: Year-round, with the wet season adding dramatic waterfalls and lush conditions. Road access to Cape Tribulation can occasionally be affected in extreme wet weather — rare, but worth checking.
Cairns City Sights: Year-round. A perfect wet-season option — mostly coach-based and sheltered from rain.
Atherton Tablelands: Year-round, but stunning in and just after the wet season when waterfalls are running at full capacity.
- Reef: dry season best
- Kuranda: always excellent
- Daintree: dramatic in wet
- Tablelands: best after rain
